Biography

Atrox from Trondheim, Norway, started out back in 1988 under the name Suffocation, but obviously changed it to Atrox in 1990.The first years was spent recording demos (Darkness, Mind Shadow, Dead Leaves, the Granskogen recordings) and playing live with bands like Equinox, Edge of Sanity, Conception, Witchhammer, Godsend etc.

In 1996 Atrox released a 7" entitled «Silence the Echoes» through the Italian label Danza Ipnotica. Atrox´ debut album «Mesmerized» came out in 1997 and was released by the legendary Norwegian label Head Not Found. The atmospheric mix of death and doom metal presented here received great feedback globally.

Atrox’ 2nd («Contentum»2000) and 3rd («Terrestrials»2002) album was released through Season of Mist. Both albums were recorded at Tico Tico Studios by Ahti Kortelainen. The music presented on these releases was more melodic and experimental/avant-garde metal. These releases got worldwide attention and due to the complexity in Atrox´ music, critics seemed to have either an love or hate relationship towards Atrox schizo metal.

The 4th album, «Orgasm» was released in 2003 by Code666. Due to a more groovy and less experimental approach «Orgasm» got much better reviews than any of the previous endeavours. After releasing «Orgasm» Atrox played some gigs and performed at the Norwegian festivals Hole in the Sky and Southern Discomfort with bands and artists like Katatonia, Arcturus, Entombed, Danzig, Red Harvest, Madder Mortem, The Haunted etc.

In 2004 Monika Edvardsen left the band and Rune Folgerø claimed the mike and revitalised the band with a completely new and masculine approach. The 5th album, «Binocular» was released in 2008 by Season of Mist, and with Runes streamlined but still eccentric vocal expression, the extensive use of electronics and computers «Binocular» reached a much broader audience and got by far the best reviews in Atrox´ history.

«Binocular» marked a new Atrox rising with many gigs played to promote the album, sharing the stage with bands like Ulver, Suffocation, Cynic, Immortal, Opeth, Rotting Christ, Sadus, Testament, Helheim, Vulture Industries, Pagans Mind, Mnemic, Enslaved, 22, Meshuggah and many others, touring and playing festivals like the Pstereo, Brutal Assault, ProgPower Europe, Southern Discomfort, Storåsfestivalen etc.
