New article about Arctic Barents Race in Norwegian newspaper

Description of Arctic Barents Race 2010.

July 14, 2009. Ketil Reitan.

Arctic Barents Race (ABR) 2010 will be the longest sled dog race in Europe.

The distance is about 1500 km.

The major part of the race will use established and well used snow machine trails in Sweden and Finland.

The ABR 2010 race will start in Murmansk, Russia on Sunday February 21 at Dolina Yuta. The finish will be at the Ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Kiruna on Friday March 5, 2010.

Arctic Barents Race will be the longest sled dog race in the world in 2011.

The race will go from Murmansk, through Kirkenes, Norway, through Finland and Sweden, and finish in Roros, Norway. The race will start on Sunday February 27 and finish on Thursday March 24. That will be 25 days and 3000 km through spectacular wilderness in 4 countries.

Number of dog teams: Up to12 teams selected on the basis of results in races like Femund 600 km or Finnmark 1000 km. Up to one half of the places be reserved for mushers from other countries than Norway. They must have race results that presume it likely that they can finish within the time limit. We expect some of the best dog teams from 6 different countries.

The number may be increased to 20 teams in 2011.

Number of dogs: Start with 14 dogs. Dogs that have been dropped can be put back in the team after a minimum of 3 days. The musher can put a dog back maximum 3 times without time penalty in 2010.

This will ensure that the team will not be too small at the end of the race.

Race format: This is a long-distance stage race. The musher that has the shortest total time between checkpoints wins the race.

We will drive about 120 km a day.

(10th place in Finnmarksløpet 154 km/day. 10th place Iditarod 180 km/day).

The teams start out with 2 minutes intervals at every major checkpoint. The team with the best total time starts first. A mass start can be held at some checkpoints. It will be a 2 hour mandatory break between some checkpoints, if the distance is more than 120 km.

This race format will ensure the teams are not too spread out. It will demand less resources from the race organization and the veterinarians. It will be more social for the mushers and those who follow the race. The first teams will get more rest and look good through the entire race.

Destinations can plan events connected to the restarts. All destinations that want to participate must contribute financially to the race.

Prices: Arctic Barents Race will provide good money prices for the mushers. The long term goal is to have total purse of 300.000 Euro.

Arctic Barents Race has entered a cooperation agreement with La Grande Odyssee in France and Switzerland. In 2010 there will be a 5000 Euro prize for the best total result in the 2 races. This will be based on a percentage of the winning time and both race will count equally.

All dogs must have rabies vaccinations and blood test and worm treatment. The same rules apply when bringing dogs from European countries to Norway (according to Mattilsynet, Norway). Cost for 14 dogs about 2000 Euro (16000 NOK).

A tent will be mandatory equipment. The tents will probably be supplied by a race sponsor. The mushers will sleep in the tents at some checkpoints.

All dog blankets the musher wants to use must be brought in the sled from the start of the race. Dog jackets will be mandatory equipment.
